Everything You Need To Know About Becoming A Lash Tech

Why Lashing?

The lash industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the beauty industry and is estimated at USD 1.36 Billion in 2020. Many women are choosing to make a career shift into the beauty industry to become lash techs. As a lash tech, you have to opportunity to make 6-figures, set your own schedule, and transform lives with your tweezers.

This article will teach you everything you need to know in order to become a legally licensed lash tech in the state of Florida.

License VS Certificate

Most people don't know the difference between a license and a certificate. In order to become a lash artist legally speaking, you will need both. Your certificate is the paper you receive after your lash training. This is not legally required by the state to do lashes, but it is necessary to learn how to perform lash extensions.

In the state of Florida, a license is legally required to perform lashes. (If you are in another state, you can check the legal requirements for your state here) In order to obtain your license, you will need to complete an esthetician or cosmetology program. Personally, I would recommend choosing the esthetician program over the cosmology since the esthetician program only requires 260 hours while the cosmology program requires 1200.

The Importance of Insurance

After getting your license and certificate, it is essential to get insured. If you plan to start your own lash business, you will not be only responsible for running your own business, but also for any accidents that may occur.

You could be held liable for common slip-and-fall accidents, client injuries or illnesses, or damages arising from your eyelash business. The legal costs alone from any of the above could put you out of business. With lash insurance, you’ll be protected from common claims and have coverage in the case that something goes wrong.

Lash insurance typically costs anywhere from $97-250 per year. You can get insurance from Beauty and Bodywork, ASCP, or Marine Agency.
